SABADELL – Within the framework of the celebration of the 15th anniversary of the Informatics, Multimedia, and Telecommunications Studies of the Open University of Catalonia (UOC), an event was held this Tuesday at the Cosmocaixa in Barcelona entitled ICT as an engine of innovation and the entrepreneurs. The objective of the event, which was attended by more than 150 people, was to create a meeting and reflection point to analyze the role of ICT in the field of the creation of new companies and was opened by the UOC's rector, Josep A. Planell Estany. Five Catalan emerging companies that have made technology and innovation the distinguishing feature of their business were invited to the event. The invited companies were NaN•tic (ERPs in free software), Wikiloc (social network of routes and itineraries), Marfeel (applications to improve content consumption on tablets), WorldSensing (sensors for telematic monitoring of engineering works), and Ubicuo Studio (multimedia projects for the cultural field), although the representatives of the latter company were unable to attend the talk.

During his speech, the founding partner of NaN•tic, Albert Cervera, described the NaN•tic experience as "the example of a technology company that has started from scratch without any external financing, without asking for money, simply spending only the money that he had managed to earn with his services", as opposed to the usual scheme of seeking rounds of financing in venture capital companies. Cervera has also highlighted the company's commitment to free software, a field in which it has been contributing decisively to its evolution and improvement both from the company and at an individual level by its members.

For Cervera "large companies are the ones that can get the most benefits with this type of software since they are the ones that can save the most user licenses, but paradoxically, their managers usually choose the most expensive product because no one can discuss their decision with them in case of a malfunction or poor implementation". For the person in charge of NaN•tic "in the field of ERP, free software ensures that the client has no relationship with the manufacturer and can only gain loyalty thanks to a good service from the company that has implemented the project".

Finally, Albert Cervera has pointed out that "the innovation of NaN•tic lies in our business model since we guarantee our clients that their business management software will never end up becoming a problem due to the exorbitant maintenance costs that usually entails".

The event ended with an open round of questions from the public and was closed by the UOC's Vice-Rector for Research and Innovation, Teresa Sancho.
